Patio and stone paving repairs in Altrincham

Altrincham has the oldest and the best paving on our patch, and the most of it worth saving. Victorian and Edwardian houses near the centre, thirties semis out towards Timperley and Hale, and gardens with real level changes in them.

The approach here is different: lift carefully, keep everything, rebuild what is underneath.

Around fifteen minutes from the office.

Old stone is worth more than new paving

A lot of the older properties have genuine stone flags — York stone and local sandstone — laid long before anyone thought about sub-bases. Those flags are worth considerably more than anything you would replace them with, and they are almost always worth lifting and relaying rather than ripping out.

They need handling differently. Stone is heavier, more brittle at the edges and far less forgiving of a careless lift than a concrete flag. We lift by hand, stack on battens and relay on a full bed rather than dabs.

Gardens here also tend to have more in them: steps, terraces, retaining walls, changes in level that were built up over a century. Where a level is being held back, it needs building to hold it, not hoping the soil stays put.

What we are usually called out for here

  • York stone and sandstone flags lifting, rocking or sitting unevenly
  • Failed lime or cement pointing between old flags
  • Steps and terraces that have moved where nothing was retaining them
  • Victorian paths and tiled thresholds needing careful relaying
  • Drainage around older properties where ground has built up against the wall
